$45.00
Fruit Characteristics
Flavor: Intensely sweet with a rich, complex flavor profile often described as a blend of apricot, peach, melon, honey, and citrus notes, balanced by a subtle tanginess.
Aroma: Emits a powerful, permeating, and fragrant aroma that is described as musky, floral, and sweet.
Texture: The flesh is a vibrant, deep saffron-orange color and is notably smooth, buttery, and completely fiberless (non-fibrous).
Appearance: The fruit is typically oval to oblong-shaped and weighs between 150 and 300 grams (5.3 to 10.6 oz). The thin, resilient skin turns a rich golden-yellow color with a potential tinge of red on the top when ripe.
Tree & Cultivation Details
Origin: The variety originated in India, specifically the Konkan region of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka, and is named after the Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque, who helped introduce grafting techniques in the 16th century.
Seasonality: It is a highly seasonal fruit with a short harvest period, typically available from end of March through the end of June in India.
Growth: Alphonso mango trees are a dwarf to medium variety, growing to about 10–15 feet tall (or up to 20-30 feet in ideal conditions). They require full sunlight and well-drained, sandy loam soil to thrive.
Cultivation Challenges: The fruit is challenging and labor-intensive to cultivate and hand-harvest due to its delicate skin and sensitivity to climatic conditions. It is also prone to certain pests and fungal infections, such as powdery mildew on the flowers.
